Islamic Creed- Names of Allah- Names of Allah in Brief Lesson (13-30): Al-Wasi' (The All-Encompassing)

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

 Allah's Name Al-Wasi' (The All-Encompassing.)

The manifestations of Allah's Name Al-Wasi' (The All-Encompassing) in the sacred month of Ramadan:

The meaning of Al-Wasi' (The All-Encompassing):

Linguistically, the adjective "wasi" is derived from the noun "sa'a" which means: abundance. In other words, when knowledge is described as 'wasi', it refers to vast and comprehensive knowledge. Moreover, when benevolence is described as 'wasi', it refers to abundant benefaction, big favors, and so on.
When it comes to Allah's Name Al-Wasi', it means He Whose Boundless Benevolence encompasses all the poor, and Whose Mercy encompasses all things.
In fact, man has limited capacity, i.e. if you ask someone to lend you a great amount of money which is bigger than his own wealth, or if you ask him for help with a matter that is beyond the limit of his power, he will say: sorry, I cannot help you because it is beyond my capacity.
Likewise, if you ask someone about something he has no knowledge of, he will simply say: I know nothing about it, and it is beyond my knowledge.
Thus, man has limited knowledge, ability, power and influence. Furthermore, no matter how knowledgeable or powerful man is, there will always be another one who ranks higher than him.
In contrast, Allah Glorified and Exalted be He is Al- Wasi' (the All-Encompassing); His Mercy encompasses all things, His Great Bounty encompasses all the poor and His Boundless Benevolence encompasses all creatures. He says:

"And ordain for us good in this world, and in the Hereafter. Certainly we have turned unto You." He said: (As to) My Punishment I afflict therewith whom I will and My Mercy embraces all things. That (Mercy) I shall ordain for those who are the Muttaqun (pious - see V.2:2), and give Zakat; and those who believe in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs and revelations, etc.);"

[Al-A'raaf, 156]

Moreover, human senses are limited. For example, if two people are talking to you at the same time, you will ask one of them to wait until the other finishes talking because you cannot listen to both of them at the same time. Thus, your hearing is limited.

In contrast, Allah Glorified and Exalted be He, is the All-Hearing; when He responds to the Du'a (supplication) of one of His worshippers, it does not hinder Him from responding to the Du'a of another one. Furthermore, if all people on earth were to make Du'a at the same time, Allah the Almighty will hear them all at the same time. He says:

"Your Ilah (God) is only Allah, the One (La ilaha illa Huwa) (none has the right to be worshipped but He). He has full knowledge of all things."

[Taha, 98]

Also, some scholars say: Al-Wasi' is the One Who has Boundless Bounty and Limitless Blessings. As the saying goes: "When Allah the Almighty bestows His Blessing on someone, He showers His Endless Blessing upon him in a truly amazing way".
Let's ponder over some aspects of the amazing Creation of Allah the Almighty: for example, there are million different species of fish in the sea; some species of fish look like flowers, other have transparent skin; their internal organs can be seen through their very pale skin, and other are too black. Furthermore, to protect themselves, some types of fish secrete a black liquid which turns into fog so that the fish hides behind it, while other species generate electrical current which causes electrical shock (up to 6000 Volts). Likewise, there are countless kinds of birds in the world.
Also, let's reflect on the creation of human body: for example, everyone has a unique fingerprint, and each fingerprint has about 100 identifying characteristics or points of minutiae. If 7 of these points are the same, it is enough to make a match. Furthermore, when we enlarge a fingerprint's image, its curved lines form different shapes which can be likened to islands, branches, bays and headlands, etc.

Moreover, the iris of the eye is as unique as the fingerprint, and that is why some security systems depend on iris recognition and eye-scanning technology, since no two eyes have exactly the same iris patterns.
Thus, Al-Wasi' is the Vast, the Boundless and the All-Encompassing Who has Limitless and Infinite Attributes, whereas all creatures have finite nature (i.e. human beings have limited power, senses, perception, etc.)  Allah the Almighty says:

"And to Allah belong the east and the west, so wherever you turn yourselves or your faces there is the Face of Allah (and He is High above, over His Throne). Surely! Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knowing."

[Al-Baqarah, 115]

The application of Allah's Name Al-Wasi' in our life is that we should extend our mercy to all people, not only to our children, relatives, and tribes, etc. Moreover, the deeper your faith is, the more you show mercy to all creatures.
In conclusion, during the sacred month of Ramadan, Allah's Name Al-Wasi' is manifested when Allah the Almighty responds to the supplications of all His worshippers especially at Sahar time
(the last hours of the night before dawn) as well as at time of Iftar (the fast-breaking meal). It is also manifested when we eat and drink of the boundless sustenance provided by Allah the Almighty.
