Scientific topics- Scientific wonders (16): Penguin's Sacrifice – The Ideal Father.

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Where does the penguin live?

لإhe South Pole is the coldest region on earth wherein winter lasts for 6 months. Looking after newly hatched penguins in such tough environment entails unimaginable sacrifice from the male and female penguins.

During breeding season, the penguins move in groups to the place where they are going to mate. This trip takes several weeks, and the penguins travel walking as far as 100 kilometers, and when their short feet get tired, they slide themselves on their stomachs across the ice. However, different colonies miraculously travel towards the same direction.

When they reach the end of the trip, penguins gather in thousands at the same spot in order to achieve a significant purpose, which is to mate. In this place, the females lay their eggs that will hatch later.

This difficult trip is just the start of all the difficulties and sacrifices yet to come. The first difficulty that emerges a little while after the female lays its egg is the chilly winter, as the temperature drops to minus 50 degrees centigrade, accompanied with snowy wind at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour.
The way the eggs are safeguarded after the females lay them:
The amazing fact is that the females pass the eggs to the males and go back to the sea to hunt for food to feed the little ones after they hatch. The male penguins take the mission of incubating the eggs. The male penguin puts the egg carefully on its feet and covers it with its fur. If the birds are not careful, the egg will fall and break and the chick will die at once.

This unimaginable sacrifice is offered by the males which stand on their feet for whole 4 months without getting any food, and their only mission is to protect the egg from falling to the ice. If the male needs to walk with the egg on its feet, it offers a special walk to guarantee that the egg stays on its feet and covered with its fur, given the temperature is minus 50 degrees centigrade, and the wind speed is 100 kilometers per hour carrying with it chill and snow.

The difficulties the penguins face in their lives:

The males will huddle in large groups for protection against the icy winds and storms. They make a circle, and their provision through winter is only patience. After the 4 tough months pass, the eggs hatch and that pretty much marks the coming of spring in the South Pole.  The little chicks open their eyes to the new world while they are still on their father's feet. They still need protection, because they do not develop a fat layer under their skin yet to protect them from the chilly weather.

The first meal the little chick gets is kept in its father's crop for 4 months. Though the father is in dire need of this meal, it gives preference to the little chick's need of food. This but gives us a lesson in raising our children.

The females remain in the sea for 4 months hunting for food, and they return to land well fed to give food to the little chicks. The females were not idle during these 4 months, but rather they were gathering food for the little chicks.

As the females come back (to take over the final stages of incubation), the hungry males rush to the sea alternately, and when they are fed up, they go back to the nest and continue looking after the little penguins along with the females.

The little penguins get bigger, and they are able at this age to wander around with their devoted fathers. Keep in mind that the male penguins have no means of obtaining food during the 4 months, so they keep standing for the sake of their little chicks balancing the eggs on their feet, so that they will not touch the cold ice for even one second.

The purpose of reflecting on the creation of the heavens and the earth:

Reflecting on the creation of the heavens and the earth is the shortest path to know Allah and the widest gate to get to Him, simply because it puts you face to face with the Greatness of Allah.

﴾ Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding* Those who remember Allah (always, and in prayers) standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth, (saying): "Our Lord! You have not created (all) this without purpose, glory to You! (Exalted be You above all that they associate with You as partners). Give us salvation from the torment of the Fire. ﴿

[Aal-'Imran, 190-191]

We are talking about man's reason, and the latter is the means to know Allah.
