Radio Sermon (28): What Does the Prophet's Migration Teach Us

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. O Allah Who reveals secrets, Who covers up the faults, Who grants people life, Who creates events, Who merges the night into the day, Who heals righteous people, Who treats bad people with patience, so that they may repent and Who saves righteous people from shame and Hell-Fire, please forgive our mistakes, Be with us, even if we wrong  ourselves by committing sins, let us see the Light of Your Noble Face, let us remain guided to Your Right Path, let us not be far from You after getting closer to You, let us not be in hardship after being relieved. O Allah, we provoke hostility towards Your enemies for Your Sake, so please do not make them rejoice at the misfortune which befalls us due to neglecting some of the Islamic duties, and we befriend Your devoted worshippers for Your Sake, so do not keep us away from them due to our negligence. I bear witness that none is worthy to be worshipped but Allah Alone Who has no partner.

A poet said:

Reflect on the green oasis, the flowing water,
these deserts and the unshakable mountains.
Reflect on the blooming meadow, the flowers,
the dew, the night, the daybreak and the singing bird.
Reflect on these gentle breezes, the earth,
the sky, and everything else,
you will find that everything praises and glorifies Allah.

***
The sun and the full moon indicate His Wisdom.
The land and the sea represent some of His Great Generosity.
The bird glorifies  Him, and the plant sanctifies  Him,
The wave announces that He is the Greatest,
and the whale calls Him in secret.
The ant under the hard rock glorifies Him,
and each cell of the bees praises Him.
He is the Lord of the heaven and the Lord of the earth.

A poet said:

O Messenger of Allah, I call you on behalf of my weak people
hoping to ask Allah for us to take away this calamity
My people indulged themselves in pleasures
and were deceived by invalid bliss.
It is a disaster for them to be filled with joy during calamities
The example of reformers and you is as the one of fingers and hand;
you are the source of their knowledge and you are a great example to them.
O Messenger of Allah, they have followed their own lusts
which have restrained them from obeying Allah.
They are totally disunited; neither their souls are brought together
by trust nor their hearts are brought together by purity

O Allah, our Lord, have peace and blessings upon our Master Muhammad, upon his Folks and upon his Companions, the trustees of his noble mission and the leaders of his brigades. O Allah, be pleased with them and with us, O Lord of the Worlds.

O servants of Allah, I advise you and myself to fear Allah, and I urge you to obey Him.  I would like to start with what is good

Introduction

1-    "And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad PBUH) gives you, take it…"

Dear believing brothers in the Arab and Muslim worlds, the Noble Prophet's life differs from that of the great leaders and reformers, in the sense that all of his words, actions, approvals, and attitudes are considered a reference and legislation to all mankind. This is because Allah, may His Glory be glorified, protected him from committing mistakes in his words, actions and attitudes; he never spoke of his own desire, but it is an Inspiration inspired to him. Thus, Allah, may His Glory be glorified, orders us to take whatever the Prophet, peace be upon him, has given us. Allah the Almighty says:

(And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad PBUH) gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it), and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.)

[Al-Hashr, 7]

Allah, may His Glory be glorified, says that applying the Prophet Sunnah is a practical evidence of one's love to Allah. Regarding this point, Allah the Almighty says:

(Say (O Muhammad PBUH to mankind): "If you (really) love Allah then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Qur'an and the Sunnah), Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.")

[Aal-'Imran, 31]

2-    The Prophet's missions are to convey the Message and to be role models:

The missions of Prophet Muhammad and all other Prophets, peace be upon them, are two major ones; the first mission is to convey and clarify the Message of Allah to people as it is referred to in the following Ayah:

(O Messenger (Muhammad PBUH)! Proclaim (the Message) which has been sent down to you from your Lord. And if you do not, then you have not conveyed His Message. Allah will protect you from mankind. Verily, Allah guides not the people who disbelieve.)

[Al-Ma'idah, 67]

The second mission is to be good examples to people to follow. Allah the Almighty says:

(Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad PBUH) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.)

[Al-Ahzab, 21]

3-    The Prophet's circumstances before Hijrah were decreed by Allah:

Dear believing brothers, wherever you might be, the circumstances of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and the events he faced were decreed due to Allah's Perfect Protection and Profound Wisdom, so that the Prophet would have the best stance towards them as a human being to confirm his human nature and to achieve the purpose of his existence. Hence, every man can have similar events in his life (in a different time and place) since the human nature is one. Allah the Almighty says:

(It is He Who has created you from a single person (Adam), and (then) He has created from him his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], in order that he might enjoy the pleasure of living with her.)

[Al-A'raf, 189]

The battle between al-Haqq (truth) and al-Batil (falsehood), good and evil, and Iman (belief) and Kufr (disbelief) is an old and continuous one, and man's nature is the same in the different eras and places, when and where his raising and falling positions, power and weakness, and belief and disbelief are manifested. Accordingly, dear brothers, the stance of the Prophet, peace be upon him, towards the circumstance he had is the one Allah the Almighty wants us to have whenever we have the same circumstances or the same events in our life.

4-    Man loves the land where he was born by Fitrah:

Dear believing brothers and sisters, man was created to love the land where he was born and to have his heart attached to the landmarks and places where he was raised up. Thus, when he is forced to leave the land he loves, his heart will be broken, and he will be in a sorrowful situation. Furthermore, he may prefer death to abandon his homeland after feeling that he is uprooted. Allah the Almighty indicates this fact in the following Noble Ayah:

(And if We had ordered them (saying), "Kill yourselves (i.e. the innocent ones kill the guilty ones) or leave your homes," very few of them would have done it; but if they had done what they were told, it would have been better for them, and would have strengthened their (Faith);)

[An-Nisa', 66]

5-    Man's mission in this world is to worship Allah:

One more fact is that man was created to worship Allah the Almighty by getting himself acquainted to Him and knowing his Divine Method. Also, he is assigned to worship Allah, Exalted ad Sublime be He, through performing the obligatory acts of worship, such as Salat (prayers), Siyaam (fasting), Hajj (pilgrimage) and Zakat (giving alms), through enjoining Ma'ruf (whatever that is good) and forbidding Munkar (whatever that is evil) and through performing good deeds which are the price he pays to gain happiness in the eternal Hereafter. Allah the Almighty says:

(And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).)

[Adh-Dhariyat, 56]

In another Surah, Allah the Almighty says:

(O mankind! Worship your Lord (Allah), Who created you and those who were before you so that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious).)

 [Al-Baqarah, 21]

6-    Man should migrate from the land where he cannot worship Allah:

Based on the above mentioned facts, if man lives in a land where he cannot worship Allah properly, where he cannot act upon the Divine Method, and where he cannot avoid the evil which prevents him from practicing his religion freely or he cannot face it, what should he do? Will he lose the eternal bliss in the Hereafter due to his mundane interests? Allah the Almighty says:

(Verily! As for those whom the angels take (in death) whilethey are wronging themselves (as they stayed among the disbelievers even though emigration was obligatory for them), they (angels) say (to them): "In what (condition) were you?" They reply: "We were weak and oppressed on earth." They (angels) say: "Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to emigrate therein?" Such men will find their abode in Hell – What an evil destination!)

[An-Nisa', 97]

This is the response, which is also indicated in the following Hadith:

(There is no obedience to a created being if it is disobedience to Allah the Almighty)

This is the logical reaction of the Prophet, peace be upon him, when he migrated from Makkah to Madinah. I would like to stop at few points concerning Hijrah as we are celebrating its anniversary these days.

Moral lessons learnt from Hijrah:

1-    Favoring the sublime interests over the mundane ones:

Dear brothers in faith wherever you might be, Hijrah teaches us that if man has a conflict between his mundane interests and the sublime and eternal ones, he should favor the latter over the former, since none can save him from Allah's Punishment, and he has no excuse that stops him from choosing the transcendental and eternal interests.

2-    Abandoning al-Batil and belonging to al-Haqq:

Hijrah in the first place is a psychological stance rather than a physical journey, for it is quitting al-Batil and sticking to al-Haqq, leaving Munkar (all types of evil) and performing good (all types of good), and abandoning sins and offering acts of worship.

3-    Moving from the abode of Kufr to the abode of Islam:

Hijrah is moving from the abode of Kufr to the one of Islam.

(Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, narrated: The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "A Muslim is the one from whose tongue and hands the Muslims are safe; and a Muhajir (Emigrant) is the one who refrains from what Allah has forbidden.")

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

4-    The gate to migrate is wide open:

Dear believing brothers and sisters, Hijrah from Makkah to Madinah was closed after the take-over of Makkah as the Prophet, peace be upon him, said in the following Hadith:

(There is no Hijrah (migration) to Madinah after the take-over of Makkah.)

[Al-Bukhari on the authority of Ibn Abbas and Muslim, on the authority of A'ishah]

However, Hijrah from one city that is similar in its condition to Makkah at the time of the Prophet's Hijrah to another city that is similar to Madinah is open. Better yet, migration from any disbelieving society to a believing one is wide open till the Day of Resurrection. Besides, worshipping Allah sincerely and devotedly in an era when trials are many, lusts are burning, corruption is widespread is considered a sincere Hijrah for the Sake of Allah and His Messenger, peace be upon him. This point is highlighted in the following Hadith:

(Ma'qil bin Yasar, may allah be pleased with him, said: Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, said: "Worship during the time of tribulations (such as trials and bloodshed) is like emigrating to me.")

[Muslim and At-Tirmithi]

5-    The Divine Support does not cancel making use of the available means:

Dear believing brothers wherever you might be, Hijrah teaches us through the great plan of the Prophet, peace be upon him (when he migrated from Makkah to Madinah) that the Divine Support granted from Allah to the migrant does not mean that he can neglect using all the available means that may help him in his plan. For instance, when the Prophet, peace be upon him, decided to migrate he put a well-prepared plan in the sense that he kept his Hijrah a secret, so none of the Kuffar (infidels) would think of it, he hired a high-qualified guider to guide him in his way, he chose Thawr Cave which is located to the south of Makkah so the Kuffar would not be able to reach him, he assigned one of his companions to get him the news of the Kuffar, another one to wipe his traces, and a third one to get him food and water, and he assigned our Master Ali, may Allah ennoble his face, to wear his gown and lie on his bed to make the Kuffar who were surrounding his house to kill him think that it was him inside.

Dear believing brothers, the Prophet, peace be upon him, was well-prepared to migrate, making use of the available means and leaving no place to the chances. He depended on the available means as if they were everything, but then he trusted in Allah as if the means were not sufficient without Him. The many and accurate measurements the Prophet, peace be upon him, depended on never meant that the Prophet, peace be upon him, was afraid, but rather they meant to manifest the Prophet's obedience to Allah through acting upon His Orders, following His Laws and making them legislations to his Ummah after his death. Needless to say, the Prophet, peace be upon him, did not depend totally on the available means he used (he trusted in Allah), and the proof is the felling of tranquility he had when the chasers reached him.

(Anas Narrated: Abu Baks, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "I said to the Prophet, peace be upon him, when were in Thawr Cave, 'If one of them look where his foot is, he will see us!' The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, 'O Abu Bakr! What do you think of a couple of men Allah is the third thereof?!' ")

Dear believing brothers, the early Muslims understood the real meaning of Tawakkul (trust in Allah), and so their flags of victory fluttered all over the world, and they occupied a prominent leading position among all peoples and nations. Hence, if Muslims, nowadays would like to defeat their numerous enemies and to regain their leading position among other nations to spread the eternal Divine Message of Truth in Islam along with welfare and peace, they have to comprehend well this great lesson of the Messenger's Hijrah, particularly these days when we celebrate the anniversary of Hijrah.

The main point is that Tawakkul means making use of the available means without depending on them alone, and being in desperate need of Allah's Support, Protection and Prosperity.

6-    "He who emigrates (from his home) in the Cause of Allah, will find…"

Dear believing brothers wherever you might be, we have learnt through the amazing results of the migration of every emigrant (in the Cause of Allah) what reflects the following Ayah:

(He who emigrates (from his home) in the Cause of Allah, will find on earth many dwelling places and plenty to live by.)

[An-Nisa', 100]

His affairs will be facilitated, Allah, Exalted and Sublime be He, will protect him and He will provide him with his basic needs. Bear in mind the following Hadith, please:

(Whoever abandons something merely for the sake of Allah, will in return receive things from Allah serving him in his religion and in the Hereafter.)

[Ibn Asaaker, on the authority of Ibn Umar]

Also, whoever favors obeying Allah the Almighty over achieving his mundane interests will be granted the bounties of both the worldly life and the Hereafter by Allah the Almighty. Allah the Almighty says in the following Qudsi Hadith:

(O My salve! You desire (something) and I desire (something else). If you surrender to that which I desire, I suffice you concerning that which you desire; but if you refuse to surrender to that which I desire, I tire you out in that which you desire and then you get nothing but that which I desire.")

[Reported in Ihya' Ulum Ad-Deen]

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

(He who prefers the Hereafter to the life of this present world shall win them both; but he who prefers the life of the present world to the Hereafter shall lose them both.)

[Reported in the relic]

Migration of Uqbah Ibn Amir al-Juhani:

Uqbah Ibn Amir al-Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him, who is one of the companions of Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, said, "Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, came to Madinah while I was tending my sheep. When I heard the news of his coming, I set out to meet him without delay. When I met him I asked, 'Will you accept my pledge of allegiance, O Allah's Messenger?' 'And who are you?' asked Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him. 'Uqbah Ibn Amir al-Juhani,' I replied. 'Which do you prefer,' he asked, 'the pledge of a nomad or the pledge of someone who has migrated?'  'The pledge of someone who has migrated,' I said. So Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, took the same pledge from me as he did from the Muhajirin (the emigrants). I spent the night with him and then went back to my flock.

There were twelve of us who had accepted Islam, but we lived far from the city tending our sheep and goats in the open country. We came to the conclusion that it would be good for us if we went to Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, daily, so that he could instruct us in our religion and recite for us whatever Revelation he had received from on high. I told the others, 'Take turns to go Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him. Anyone going may leave his sheep with me, because I am too worried and concerned about my own flocks to leave them in the care of someone else.'

Each day, one after another of my friends went to the Prophet, leaving his sheep for me to look after. When each returned, I learnt from him what he had heard and benefitted from what he had understood. Before long, however, I returned to my senses and said to myself, 'Woe to you! Is it because of a flock of sheep that you remain thin and wretched and lose the opportunity to be in the company of Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, and to speak directly to him without an intermediary'. "With this, I left my flock, went to Madinah and stayed in the Masjid close to Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him."

[Kans al-Ummal]

When Uqbah Ibn Amir al-Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him, made the crucial decision to favor the company of the Prophet, peace be upon him, over tending his sheep, it never occurred to him that he would become, after only one decade, one of the prominent venerable scholars among the companions, may Allah be pleased with them, one of the best reciters of the Noble Quran, one of the great Muslim opening leaders, and one of the unique Muslim rulers. Furthermore, he had never thought of being in the first raw of the army that opened Damascus, the greatest city in the world at that time, and that his dwelling would be in the midst of its beautiful gardens in Bab Tuma. Moreover, after making that decision, it never occurred to him that he would be one of the great leaders who opened Egypt, the Emerald of the world in that era, and he had never imagined that he would become its ruler who lived at the foot of the famous mountain Al-Muqattam. After those achievements, this reverend companion participated in leading the naval expeditionary forces to open Rhodes Island in the Mediterranean. What can we say about this? Well, Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, spoke the truth when he said:

(Whoever abandons something merely for the sake of Allah, will in return receive things from Allah serving him in his religion and in the Hereafter.)

[Ibn Asaaker, on the authority of Ibn Umar]

Pay attention to the following Qudsi Hadith, please:

(Narrated 'Atiyyah from Abi Sa'id that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him said: "The Lord, Exalted and Sublime be He, said, 'Whoever is too busy with the Qur'an for remembering Me and asking Me, then I shall give him more than what I give to those who ask.')

[At-Tirmithi, on the authority of Abi Sa'id]

Hijrah in the Cause of Shaitan (for evil purposes):

1-    The features of Hijrah in the cause of Shaitan:

Dear noble brothers in the Arab and Muslim worlds, we have discussed Hijrah in the Cause of Allah so far, and we move now to talk about Hijrah in the cause of Shaitan (Satan). When man refuses to be in the side of al-Haqq and with its people, preferring to be in the side of al-Batil and its people, when man favor this mortal worldly life over the immortal Hereafter, and when he prefers to achieve his personal interests and needs to the Islamic principles and values, his Hijrah is considered in the cause of Shaitan. Also, when one migrates seeking the adornments of the worldly life, seeking collecting money at the expense of his destiny in the Hereafter, seeking benefiting the non-Muslim countries through his experiences and knowledge instead of benefiting his own country, and seeking strengthening the enemies of Muslims and weakening Muslims, this Hijrah is meant to leave one's own responsibilities and refrain from giving and scarifying. Furthermore, when one migrates to empower the enemies and help them occupy other countries to steal their natural treasures, when he migrates from a country where the acts of worship are performed to another one where Muslim values are not respected, when he migrates to collect money and have wealth at the expense of losing his religion and family, it is considered Hijrah in the cause of Shaitan. Indeed, there is a huge a difference between Hijrrah in the Cause of Allah and Hijrah in the cause of Shaitan.

2-    Jabalah Ibn al-Ayham is an example of Hijrah for Shaitan's sake:

Dear noble brothers in the Arab and Muslim worlds, Jabalah Ibn al-Ayham, one of the Ghassanies kings, came to our Master Umar bin al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, telling him that he had embraced Islam, so Umar welcomed him warmly.

Once, he went to perform Hajj, and while he was circumambulating the Ka'bah, a Bedouin from Fazarah tribe trod upon his garment, so it fell from his shoulders. Jabalah got angry, and he boxed the Bedouin and broke his nose although the man said that he did it unintentionally. The man hastened to the Khalifah Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, to complain against Jabalah, so Umar requested that Jabalah be summoned to trial. A contemporary poet narrated the story in verse saying:

-    When Jabalah arrived, our Master Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said, "O Ibn al-Ayham, a man came to me this morning in a miserable situation, having his face covered with blood as his nose was broken and his eye was hurt. I asked him who had done that to him and he replied it was you who committed such a grave deed. Did the man tell me the truth?"
-    Jabalah said, "I will never be like those who conceal the truth or deny it. I disciplined the guy and retained my right with my own hand.
-    Umar said, "The guy's right has to be redeemed! Your nail is still stained with his blood! Or else he will break your nose as you did to him."
-    Jabalah said, "How come, O Commander of Believers?! He is an ordinary man, and I am a king! How can you be pleased to see a star falling down?!"
-    Umar said, "Desires of ignorance and insolent arrogance of Jahilliyah have no place to dwell with us after we have established a new civilization of human equality and justice. Salves are now equal to free men; the poor are equal to the rich."
-    Jabalah said, "It was a mere illusion when I thought that I would be with you stronger and more honorable! I will apostatize if you force me!"
-    Umar said, "The neck of an apostate is to be chopped off by sword. It is a new world that we are now building – a world wherein wrong things are set right and differences between slaves and free men are eliminated!"

Dear brothers in faith, at that point, Jabalah decided to apostatize due to his arrogance, refusing to submit to Allah's Order. He preferred, under the cover of darkness, to leave Makkah, heading towards the north to be with the enemies of Muslims, and to spend the rest of his life in committing sins. However, when the hour of death was soon, he regretted that decision deeply, realizing that he lost his Hereafter after favoring the worldly life over it, and he said the following verses:

I wish my mother had not given birth to me
I wish I had obeyed Umar's order
I wish I had grazed the cattle
I wish I had been a captive
in Rabi'ah or Mudhar tribe
I wish I had been living in the Levant
having the least health condition
and sitting with my people
as a deaf or blind person
***

This is Hijrah in the cause of Shaitan, but Ibn al-Ayham knew the grave mistake he committed when it was too late.

Dear noble brothers, all creatures die save Allah to Whom belong Mighty and Haughtiness:

Dear brothers and sisters, call yourselves to account before you are called to do so and weigh your deeds before they are weighed against you, and you should know that the Angel of Death reached others and will reach us soon, so pay heed. The wise man is the one who calls himself to account (and refrains from doing evil deeds) and does noble deeds to benefit him after death; and the foolish person is the one who subdues himself to his temptations and desires and seeks from Allah the fulfillment of his vain desires.

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds.
2nd sermon:
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and I bear witness that there is no Deity but Allah Alone, the Protector of the righteous. And I bear witness that our Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is His Servant and Messenger, the one with noble morals.

O Allah, send Your peace and blessings on Prophet Muhammad, his noble Folk, his noble Companions,  his descendants and those who follow him till the Day of Judgment.

Quraish followed the traces of the Prophet to kill him:

1-    Suraqah wanted to captivate the noble Prophet to win the prize:

Dear brothers in faith wherever you might be, we still discussing the topic of Hijrah. The people of Quraish were shocked when they knew that Muhammad, peace be upon him, left Makkah, so they soon announced among other tribes that whosoever got them Muhammad, dead or alive, would be given a prize of a hundred camels. Suraqah bin Malik was one of his tribe's best knights; he was a very tall and powerful man, and he was an expert in tracing footsteps. When he heard of the hundred-camel prize, he put on his armor, took his sword, mounted his horse and galloped in pursuit of Muhammad, peace be upon him, before anyone else could get him and win the prize.

2-    The Divine Protection to the Noble Prophet:

Suraqah bin Malik kept following the traces of Muhammad, peace be upon him, and his companion (Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him) until he reached them. However, when he wanted to unsheathe his sword to attack them, he could not, because he saw the forelegs of his horse sinking into the ground with the sand coming up to cover both his and his horse's eyes. He cried out beseeching, "O you there! Please, pray to your Lord to release my horse's forelegs from the sand, and I promise that I will stop chasing you!" The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, made Du'a to Allah the Almighty Who released Suraqah's horse from the sand.

Driven by his greed, Suraqah soon broke his promise, and he started to chase the Prophet, peace be upon him, and Abi Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, again, but his horse's forelegs began to sink more deeply than before. He called out for help again, "Here are my sword, my food, and everything! Take them, and I make a vow to Allah to defend you against anyone who would come to chase you after me!" They said, "We do not need your food or things." One more time, Allah' Messenger, peace be upon him, the most merciful of all mankind, made Du'a to Allah for Suraqah; and the latter's horse went off.  Allah the Almighty says,

This is Allah's Divine Protection to the Prophet, peace be upon him.

3-    The Prophet's glad tidings to Suraqah:

When Suraqah was about to leave, the Prophet, peace be upon him, said to him, "O Suraqah, How will you feel when you wear the two bracelets of Khosrau (the Persian King)?!" Suraqah asked in amazement, "Khosrau son of Hermiz, the Persian King who owns the great White Palace in Mada'in?!" "Yes, indeed, Khosrau son of Hermiz", replied calmly the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him." The Persian King, Khosrau son of Hermiz, was one of the greatest and most powerful kings at that time.

As time passed, Muhammad, peace be upon him, who had left Makkah forcibly, as a homeless man who had no cover but darkness and who was wanted dead or alive, returned to Makkah once again as a Master and a Conqueror surrounded by thousands of brave soldiers armed with white swords and dark spears. Suraqah came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, to embrace Islam before him, recalling that day when he was about to kill him for the sake of a hundred-camel prize. After having embraced Islam, however, a nail cutting of the Prophet, peace be upon him, became dearer and more beloved to Suraqah than all the camels of the whole world.

Many years passed, and Umar bin al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, became the Khalifah (Caliph). One day he gladly welcomed the good news from Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, the leader of the Muslim army to Persia, announcing the Muslim victory over Khosrau and his men and bringing a lot of spoils, among which were Khosrau's crown which was ornamented with jewels and precious stones, his clothes that were embroidered in gold, his scarf that was adorned with diamonds, his two bracelets, and other countless precious things. Umar looked at all the spoils in amazement searching them indifferently with a stick that was in his hand, and he said, "Verily, the men who brought all these things are indeed honest!" Ali bin Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, who was standing with him, said praising, "You are amazed about the men's honesty, aren't you? They are honest, because you are as such, and had you been dishonest, they would have been dishonest, too." Then, Umar called for Suraqah bin Malik and put Khosrau's clothes, crown and bracelets on him saying, "Bravo! Bravo! A humble Arabian from Bani Mudlij puts on his head Khosrau's crown and on his hands his bracelets!" Allah the Almighty says:

(Allah has promised those among you who believe, and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the earth, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the authority to practise their religion, that which He has chosen for them (i.e. Islam). And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me. But whoever disbelieved after this, they are the Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).)

[An-Nur, 55]

He also says in another Surah:

(Then, there has succeeded them a posterity who have given up As-Salat (the prayers) [i.e. made their Salat (prayers) to be lost, either by not offering them or by not offering them perfectly or by not offering them in their proper fixed times, etc.] and have followed lusts. So they will be thrown in Hell.)

[Maryam, 59]

4-    A word to a wise man is enough:

I think, dear brothers, that you understand what I would like to say; Allah will never grant to the disbelievers a way (to triumph) over the believers. I told you the story of Suraqah very briefly, due to the short time we have, and I did not go into the wonderful details mentioned in it. Therefore, I urge you to read the story in the books of Seerah (the biography of the Prophet, peace be upon him) in which you can find many proofs that indicate the Prophethood of Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, and which refer to the fulfilled promises of Allah the Almighty to the believers, making them rulers, powerful and protected.

Dear believing brothers, Abu Na'im narrated that when Allah's Messenger, peace be upon him, left Makkah, he made the following Du'a:

(Praise be to Allah who created me while I was nothing. O Allah, help me overcome the hardships of the worldly life and the calamities of the nights and days. O Allah, be my companion in my travel, replace me among my people, bless what You have provided me with, let me be humble before You, help me be steadfast, and let my love be to You. O my Lord and the Lord of the weak, I seek refuge with the light of Your Noble Countenance by which the heavens and the earth radiate, and by which the darkness dispels, and through which the affairs of the first and last improve; and (I seek refuge) with You from incurring Your Wrath or being the subject of Your Anger. I seek refuge with You from the disappearance of Your Blessing, from the loss of good health, from Your sudden Vengeance and from all of Your Anger. To You returns everything and there is no power or might but by Your Will.)
