Islamic Creed- Names of Allah- Names of Allah in Brief Lesson (24-30): Al-Qayyum (the One Who sustains and protects all that exists)

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Allah's Beautiful Name Al-Qayyum:

The manifestation of Allah's Name Al-Qayyum in the blessed month of Ramadan:

Meaning of Al-Qyyum:

Allah's Name Al-Qayyum ( The Self-Existing One, The Sustainer Of All) is mentioned in Ayat Al-Kursi (The Verse of The Throne) in which He says:

"Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists"

[Al-Baqarah, 255]

Also, it is mentioned in Surat Al-Imran; Allah the Almighty says:

"Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists"

[Al-Imran, 2]

In addition, it is mentioned in Surat Taha; Allah the Almighty says:

"And (all) faces shall be humbled before (Allah), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. And he who carried (a burden of) wrongdoing (i.e. he who disbelieved in Allah, ascribed partners to Him, and did deeds of His disobedience), became indeed a complete failure (on that Day)."

[Taha, 111]

The meanings of Allah's Name 'Al-Qayyum':

'Al-Qayyum' means the Self-Existing One Whose Absolute Existence does not depend on others, whereas the continuity of the existence of all creatures depends entirely on Allah the Almighty. In other words, no one, for example, can be sure that he will live another minute, or even another second.
Thus, Allah the Almighty is the Self-Existing One, whereas our existence is completely subject to Allah's Decree, i.e. no one can live another hour, day, or week except if it is previously ordained for him by Allah the Almighty.

Thus, 'Al-Qayyum' means the One upon Whom the existence of all creatures depends, i.e. anything that exists depends on Allah the Almighty for its existence. Moreover, everything happens with Allah's Will and Permission. For example, the sun rises everyday with His Permission, all people around you are still alive with His Permission, and so on.
Thus, Allah the Almighty is the Self-Existing One. Moreover, anything that exists depends on Him for its existence.

Also, 'Al-Qayyum' means the One Whom all creatures need in everything. So, when one deeply believes in that, he will ask Allah 'Al-Qayyum' Alone for his needs, and he will never seek help from other than Him since all creatures depend on Him for their existence.

Besides, 'Al-Qayyum' means the One Who arranges the affairs and the sustenance of all creatures. For example, let's ponder over how a tiny seed grows into a huge tree by Allah's Will: First of all, Allah the Almighty sends down rain, then the embryo inside the seed begins to grow, the root begins to push out and down into the soil in order to absorb the minerals dissolved in water and to transport them up to other parts of the plant. Many years later, this young plant turns into a tree, then leaves begin to unfold, flowers begin to bloom on it, then this tree begins to bear fruits.

Thus, Allah is 'Al-Qayyum' since everything happens according to His Predestination, Will, Permission, profound Wisdom, Power, Knowledge and Plan.

Allah the Almighty says:

"And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record."

[Al-An'am, 59]

Also, Al-Qayyum is the One Who is Well-Acquainted with whatever people do, and Who will bring them to an accurate account for their deeds.

Allah the Almighty says:

"Is then He (Allah) Who takes charge (guards, maintains, provides, etc.) of every person and knows all that he has earned (like any other deities who know nothing)? Yet they ascribe partners to Allah. Say: "Name them! Is it that you will inform Him of something He knows not in the earth or is it (just) a show of false words." Nay! To those who disbelieve, their plotting is made fairseeming, and they have been hindered from the Right Path, and whom Allah sends astray, for him, there is no guide."

[Ar-Ra'd, 33]

The believer's connection with Allah's Name 'Al-Qayyum'

As for the application of Allah's Name ' Al-Qayyum' in the believer's life, he should avoid asking other than Allah the Almighty concerning his needs since Allah Alone has full control and power over everything, and nothing happens except by His Will.
To make this point clear, consider the following example: if you go to a government department to carry out an official transaction,  and there are about a thousand employees there, but no one can help you except the head of that department, you will go to him directly, and you will never ask anyone of those employees for help.
Also, when one deeply believes that all matters return to Allah the Almighty and that everything happens by His Will, he will find rest and inner peace. Furthermore, the worldly life will become valueless and worthless in his sight.

Al-Bukhari, reported that when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him,  prayed Tahajjud (supererogatory night prayers), he would say:

" O Allah, to You be praise, You are the Sustainer of the Heavens and the earth and whoever is in them. To You be praise, You are the Sovereign of the heavens and earth. To You be praise, You are the Light of the heavens and earth and whoever is in them."

In conclusion, in the blessed month of Ramadan, Allah's Name ' Al-Qayyum' is manifested when the believer feels that he is in  desperate need of Allah the Almighty all the time, as well as when he knows for sure that all his righteous deeds, such as fasting during the day and performing Taraweeh prayer at night, are because of the Grace and Bounty of Allah the Almighty.
