Radio Sermon (30): Israa' and Mi'raj- Reality of Miracles in Islam

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. Praise be to Allah, who had bestows upon us numerous blessings. Glorified (and Exalted) be He (Allah) [above all that (evil) they associate with Him] [Tafsir Qurtubi, Vol. 10, Page 204] Who took His slave (Muhammad PBUH) for a journey by night from Al-Masjid-al-Haram (at Makkah) to the farthest Masjid (in Jerusalem) and took him to the high heavens letting him see the Greatest Signs, of his Lord (Allah). Verily, the (Prophet's) heart lied not (in seeing) what he (Muhammad PBUH) saw, and the sight (of Prophet Muhammad PBUH) turned not aside (right or left), nor it transgressed beyond (the) limit (ordained for it).

O Lord, the doctors could not cure us, so cure us, corruption has spread, so save us, our power has weakened, so strengthen us, and save us from Your Anger and Displeasure. O Lord, do not punish us if we forget or fall into error, nor do You punish us due to the wrongdoings of the foolish among us. O Lord, let us die while You are pleased with us, while we are not made a trial to anyone or being tried. O Lord, forgive us our sins, cover our wrongdoings, accept our repentance, mend our hearts, have mercy upon our weakness and manage our affairs.

I bear witness that there is no Deity worthy of worship but Allah Alone, having no partner; He is the Forgiver of sin, the Acceptor of repentance, the Severe in punishment, the Bestower (of favours). He the Almighty will continue to stretch out His Hand in the night, so that the sinners of the day may repent, and continue to stretch His Hand in the daytime, so that the sinners of the night may repent. Also, our Lord, the Blessed, the Superior, comes every night down on the nearest Heaven to us when the last third of the night remains, saying: "Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone seeking My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?" Allah the Almighty says to His servant, "O My servant, never give up; if you make Du'a to me sincerely, I will answer your Du'a, if you ask Me for My Forgiveness, I will forgive your sins, and if you turn to Me in repentance, I will accept your repentance.

I bear witness that our Master Muhammad is His Servant and Messenger, the Best Prophet selected and sent to the worlds. Allah the Almighty praises his reason when He says:

(Your companion (Muhammad PBUH) has neither gone astray nor has erred.)

[An-Najm, 2]

He praises his tongue when He says:

(Nor does he speak of (his own) desire.)

[An-Najm, 3]

Allah the Almighty praises his Shari'ah when He says:

(It is only an Inspiration that is inspired.)

[An-Najm, 4]

Allah the Almighty praises the one who taught him when He says:

(He has been taught (this Qur'an) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)].)

[An-Najm, 5]

Allah the Almighty praises his heart when He says:

(The (Prophet's) heart lied not (in seeing) what he (Muhammad PBUH) saw.)

[An-Najm, 11]

Allah the Almighty praises his sight when He says:

(The sight (of Prophet Muhammad PBUH) turned not aside (right or left), nor it transgressed beyond (the) limit (ordained for it).)

[An-Najm, 17]

Allah the Almighty also praises his character as a whole when He says:

(And verily, you (O Muhammad PBUH) are on an exalted standard of character.)

[An-Qalam, 4]

O Allah, have peace and blessings upon our Master Muhammad, his Folks and his Companions, the trustees of his Message, the leaders of his banners, the daylight devoted worshippers and the night knights. They reached a high rank of Islamic knowledge and certainty; Ali, may Allah be pleased with him said, "By Allah, if I knew the future, I would not have more certainty (of Allah's Decree)." Also, regarding the same point, a scholar said, "If I knew that I would die tomorrow, I would not increase my good deeds."

O Allah's servants, I advise and urge you, me included, to fear and obey Allah, and let me start the Khutbah with good matters.

Introduction: Cause and effect relationship:

1-    Cause-effect law requires two essential things:

Dear believing brothers in the Arab and Muslim worlds, beyond a shadow of doubt, Allah, may His Glory be glorified, has created the universe, with its heavens and earth, and has created all of the worlds, at top of them mankind, according to infinitely accurate Divine Systems and Laws, the most remarkable of which is the "Cause and Effect" law. This law determines that things are correlated with one another in existence by the principle of causation, i.e. one thing is the cause while another is the effect thereof.

The amazing thing that completes such Miraculous Divine Law is that the human mind is based on the same law of causation. In other words, the human mind cannot comprehend the occurrence of an incident, whatever it might be, except on the basis of the "Cause and Effect" law. Moreover, due to His Divine Mercy upon us, Allah the Almighty has made such a law of causation in both the universe and our mind lead us gently and smoothly to know Allah the Almighty, the Creator and the Originator of all things. Concerning this point, it was said, "The footsteps denote walking, and water denotes a stream. So how come that the heaven with its constellations, and the earth, with its valleys and mountains do not denote the existence of the All-Wise, the All-Knowing?!"

2-    Some things are constant due to the cause and effect relationship:

Also, due to Allah's Divine Mercy upon us, the law of causation gives the universe a kind of stability and paves the way for man to discover cosmic laws and qualities of things and to deal easily with them. Were effects not correlated to causes by the law of causation, the whole universe would be a mere chaos, and man would get lost and would never be able to make use of his mind.

3-    The reality of causes:

Whosoever believes that causes alone bring forth effects, and therefore, relies only on them is a polytheist who associates with Allah other partners in worship.  That is why Allah the Almighty bestows His Favor upon those who fall easy prey to covert Shirk (polytheism) and teaches them by making the causes on which they rely on while achieving their purposes ineffective. When such a thing happens, man is greatly surprised by unexpected effects. On the other hand, whosoever neglects causes and claims to rely on Allah for producing the desirable effects is a disobedient person, because he is careless about Allah's Systems and Laws that govern the whole universe, and because he wrongly hopes that Allah will stop such Systems and Laws for his sake.

In fact the true believer is someone who takes into consideration all the available means without relying on them alone in achieving the intended effects.  In other words, he makes use of them as if they were sufficient, but he relies on Allah the Almighty as if the available means and causes are not enough. He believes that whatever Allah wills shall inevitably be, and whatever He does not will shall never be, and that causes alone never bring about any effects unless by Allah's Will and Leave. This can be called "Positive Monotheism", which is not known to disbelievers and some believers. To this effect, Allah the Almighty says:

(And most of them believe not in Allah except that they attribute partners unto Him.)

[Yusuf, 106]

Some of the scholars of the interpretation of the Noble Quran said, "This is the covert Shirk."

4-    Violating the law of causation:

Dear believing brothers, in spite of the above-mentioned facts, the law of causation can be violated in some cases, but how and when? The answer is: When a Messenger of Allah comes to convey Allah's Message to people, he will certainly be demanded to bring forth clear evidence of his being the Messenger of Allah and that the Book he comes with is definitely from Allah. Here come miracles to prove truthfulness of Allah's Prophets and Messengers PBUT and validity of their religion.

Miracles can be defined as acts or events that do not follow the known laws and systems of nature; and they can be done only by Allah, the Creator of the universe, simply because it is He Who has made such Laws and Systems, and He gives such miracles to His Prophets and Messengers as evidence of their truthfulness and the Divine nature of their Message.

Although miracles are unusual, they are mentally accepted. It is not the same, however, when the mind determines that something is impossible, and when it fails to understand it. This is because being ignorant of something does not necessitate that it does not exist.

5-    Ibrahim's miracle is an example of violating the law of causation:

Dear believing brothers, both the attendants and the audience, the people of the Noble  Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) PBUH, who were idolaters, brought Ibrahim after he had demolished their idols and cast him into great fire that they had already kindled to burn him before their gods, so that their revenge over Ibrahim would be blessed by their gods. They brought a lot of wood and kindled great fire, all for glorification of their gods other than Ibrahim's Deity, Allah the Almighty, but the question is: Why did Allah the Almighty allow them to seize Ibrahim and bring him to be burned before their gods although he PBUH was His beloved Messenger?! Well, had Allah the Almighty kept Ibrahim hidden from them, they could never have reached him, and he would have been rescued from being burned, but if such a thing had happened, they would have said, "If we had seized Ibrahim, we would have burned him before our gods", and the fake power of their false gods would have remained dominant over their minds as being able to do good to those who worshipped them or harm to those who refused to do so.

Accordingly, it was both necessary and reasonable to let them catch Ibrahim and bring him before their gods, so that they would witness with their own eyes (when the Divine Miracle came to rescue Ibrahim) the complete disability and helplessness of their false gods before Allah's Irresistible Divine Power.

In another assumption, the fire that they had kindled could have been put out by an earthly cause such as heavy rain or strong wind, but in that case they would have said, "Our gods are able to burn Ibrahim, but it is the rain. Had it not rained, our gods would have burned him." But what happened? In fact, what happened was due to Allah's Profound Wisdom; Ibrahim PBUH did not hide from them, but rather he was seized, the fire was not put out, but rather it was made more ablaze, and Ibrahim PBUH was brought and thrown into the fire. However, Allah's Irresistible Power came to render all causes invalid and to take away from fire the ability to burn. Allah the Almighty says:

(We (Allah) said: "O fire! Be you coolness and safety for Ibrahim (Abraham)!")

[Al-Anbiya', 69]

Let me ask the attendants and the audience this question: What would have happened if Allah the Almighty had said: "O fire! Be coolness!" and not "Be coolness and safety!"?! Had Allah the Almighty said so, Ibrahim PBUH would have been killed by the cold! Also, what would have happened if Allah the Almighty had said: "O fire! Be coolness and safety!", but not "O fire! Be you coolness and safety for Ibrahim (Abraham)!"? Well, in such a case, the ability to burn would have been taken away from fire till the Day of Resurrection!

Isra' and Mi'raj:

1-    Isra' and Mi'raj are declared in the Noble Quran:

Dear believing brothers in the Arab and Muslim worlds, I would like to move to the topic of the Khutbah today, which is al-Isra' wal al-Mi'raj (The Night Journey and Ascension) of the Noble Prophet PBUH. In a definitive reference to the Noble Prophet's Night Journey from the Sacred Masjid in Makkah to the Furthest Masjid in Jerusalem, Allah the Almighty says:

(Glorified (and Exalted) be He (Allah) [above all that (evil) they associate with Him] [Tafsir Qurtubi, Vol. 10, Page 204] Who took His slave (Muhammad PBUH) for a journey by night from Al-Masjid-al-Haram (at Makkah) to the farthest Masjid (in Jerusalem), the neighbourhood whereof We have blessed, in order that We might show him (Muhammad PBUH) of Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.). Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.)

[Al-Isra', 1]

Also, in an unclear reference (out of Allah's Mercy upon us) to the Noble Prophet's Ascension into the heavens, Allah the Almighty says:

(By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes)*Your companion (Muhammad PBUH) has neither gone astray nor has erred* Nor does he speak of (his own) desire* It is only an Inspiration that is inspired* He has been taught (this Qur’an) by one mighty in power [Jibrael (Gabriel)]* Dhu Mirrah (free from any defect in body and mind), Fastawa [then he (Jibrael – Gabriel) rose and became stable]. [Tafsir At-Tabari].* While he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon* Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer* And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer* So did (Allah) convey the Inspiration to His slave [Muhammad PBUH through Jibrael (Gabriel)]* The (Prophet's) heart lied not (in seeing) what he (Muhammad PBUH) saw* Will you then dispute with him (Muhammad PBUH) about what he saw [during the Mi’raj: (Ascent of the Prophet PBUH over the seven heavens)]* And indeed he (Muhammad PBUH) saw him [Jibrael (Gabriel)] at a second descent (i.e. another time).)

[An-Najm, 1-13]

2-    The wisdom behind Isra' and Mi'raj:

As for the wisdom behind al-Isra', Allah the Almighty sums it up in His Divine Words:

(…In order that We might show him (Muhammad PBUH) of Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.).)

[Al-Isra', 1]

Concerning the wisdom behind al-Mi'raj, Allah the Almighty sums it up in the following Ayah:

(Indeed he (Muhammad PBUH) did see, of the Greatest Signs, of his Lord (Allah).)

[An-Najm, 18]

Pondering over the first Ayah in Surah Al-Isra':

The phrase "Glorified (and Exalted) be He (Allah) [above all that (evil) they associate with Him]" in the first Ayah of Surah Al-Isra' denotes that the Prophet's Isra' and Mi'raj are not subject to earthly laws or dimensions of place and time. They both belong to Allah's Infinite Divine Power, which does not follow any of the laws or systems of nature. In other words, they are Divine Miracles that cannot be subject to human judgment or measurement.

Allah the Almighty says, "in order that We might show him (Muhammad PBUH)" and not "to show them",  to denote that such a miracle was singled out only for the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad, (PBUH), from among all mankind, as a kind of honor. In other words, Allah the Almighty wanted to show His Messenger some of the Signs of His Infinite Divine Power and Miraculous Creativity. Also, He wanted to show him His Majestic Kingdom and that the final Return of all creatures is to Him, so that his heart would tranquil, his insight would be enlightened, his faith would firmly be established, and the world of the Unseen would be seen and perceived by him after it had been mere mental conception based on the Divine Revelation. Concerning this last point, there is a big difference between definitive knowledge based on informative certainty, true knowledge based on eye-witnessing, and definitive true knowledge based on all senses.

Allah's Words, "His slave (Muhammad PBUH)" mean that man, no matter how many miracles he is granted, and no matter how much honor he receives from his Lord, can be nothing but a mere slave of His Lord, the Creator of the earth and the heavens.

As for Allah's Words, "Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer", they will be dealt with later on in this Khutbah.

3-    Isra' and Mi'raj are meant to pacify the Noble Prophet:

Dear believing brothers wherever you might be, Isra' and Mi'raj were for the Prophet PBUH a kind of elimination of former distress, strengthening of his noble heart, reassurance of the prosperous future of Da'wah (the Call for Islam), and recompense for earthly roughness by friendly heavenly reception, and for roughness of the world of people by honor of the Upper World in heavens.

Undoubtedly, Isra' and Mi'raj were a unique honor to the Noble Prophet, because after the severe trial of At-Ta'if, Allah the Almighty  made him know that he is the first and foremost of all the children of Adam, and that he is the first and foremost of all Prophets and Messengers PBUT. Furthermore, Allah the Almighty let him see His Kingdom of the heavens and earth and the final Return of all creatures on the Day of Resurrection. Moreover, Isra' and Mi'raj came after the so-called 'Am Al-Huzn (Year of Grief), when the Prophet's wife, Khadeejah, the truthful believing woman who helped him at times of hardship and consoled him at times of distress with both herself and wealth died. Besides, it was the year when his uncle Abu Talib, who showed a great deal of nobility as a guardian and a lot of heroism as a defender to him died. In that same year, indeed, Quraish was able to do much more harm and injury to the Noble Prophet PBUH than any other time. In addition, in that same year, the Noble Prophet went out to At-Ta'if seeking to call its people to Islam and getting help and support from them. Unfortunately, they gave him an unfriendly welcome, rejected arrogantly his Da'wah, spoke badly to him and even allured their children and fools against him. No doubt, the Noble Prophet, bore hardship and distress in that year that no human being could ever bear unless he were a Prophet.

4-    The Prophet being tested before Isra' and Mi'raj teaches Muslims patience:

Dear believing brothers wherever you might be, Isra' and Mi'raj were a great honor to the Prophet PBUH after his amazing success in a difficult trial in At-Ta'if.

Dear believing brothers, the many calamities the Prophet PBUH had particularly in At-Ta'if, were part of his mission in conveying Allah's Message to all mankind. In other words, he came to convey the true Aqeedah about the universe and its Creator, Allah Almighty, life, man and his mission in life, rules of the acts of worship and transactions, and good manners, as much as he came to teach Muslims, through his actions that they must be up to what Allah the Almighty has enjoined on them of endurance and perseverance. This is indicated in Allah's following Words:

(O you who believe! Endure and be more patient (than your enemy), and guard your territory by stationing army units permanently at the places from where the enemy can attack you, and fear Allah, so that you may be successful.)

[Aal-'Imran, 200]

The Prophet PBUH has taught people by his words as well as by his deeds. He PBUH said to people:

(…And offer your prayers in the way you saw me offering my prayers)

[Al-Bukhari, on the authority of Malik bin Huwairith]

He also said:

(Learn your rituals (by seeing me performing them)

[Muslim]

He PBUH taught them by his behavior to be as patient as he was. It might be wrongly thought that the Messenger of Allah PBUH was defeated in At-Ta'if and was, and so he felt hopeless and desperate to such as extent that he turned to Allah to make Du'a and complain against those who did him hard. In fact, he was neither helpless nor hopeless, but rather he faced all trials and hardships with unmatched patience and perseverance for Allah's Sake, because he could have taken his revenge over those who did harm to him, particularly over those who pushed their children and fools to hurt him.

(It has been narrated on the authority of A'ishah, the wife of the Prophet (may peace be upon him), who said to the Messenger of Allah (may peace he upon him): Messenger of Allah, has there come upon you a day more terrible than the day of Uhud. He said: "I have experienced from your people and the hardest treatment I met from them was what I received from them on the day of 'Aqaba. I betook myself to Ibn Abd Yalil bin Abd Kulal with the purpose of inviting him to Islam, but he did not respond to me as I desired. So I departed with signs of (deep) distress on my face. I did not recover until I reached Qarn al-Tha'alib. Where I raised my head, lo! Near me was a cloud which had cast its shadow on me. I looked and lo! there was in it the angel Jibrael who called out to me and said: 'Allah The Honoured and Glorious, has heard what your people have said to you, and how they have reacted to your call. He has sent to you the angel in charge of the mountains so that you may order him what you wish (him to do) with, regard to them.' The angel in charge of the mountains (then) called out to me, greeted me and said: 'O Muhammad, Allah has listened to what your people have said to you. I am the angel in charge of the mountains, and your Lord has sent me to you so that you may order me what you wish. If you wish that I should bring together the two mountains that stand opposite to each other at the extremities of Makkah to crush them in between, (I would do that).' However the Messenger of Allah PBUH said to him: "I rather hope that Allah will produce from their descendants such persons as will worship Allah, the One, and will not ascribe partners to Him.")

[Al-Bukhari]

Dear noble brothers, in spite of the harsh treatment the Prophet PBUH received from his people, he did not dissociate himself from them. On the contrary, he made Du'a to Allah for them, and he excused them for their mistreatment when he PBUH said:

(O Allah, guide my people, for they do not know)

Even more, he PBUH hoped that their offspring would be devoted monotheist worshippers. This incident was one of the hardest trials the Noble Prophet PBUH passed successfully, and was, therefore, deservedly described by Allah the Almighty as being of a great noble character.

5-    There is no contradiction between patient and complaining to Allah:

Dear believing brothers in the Arab and Muslim worlds, there is no contradiction between remaining patient on hardships and making Du'a to Allah the Almighty submissively. Actually, complaining to Allah the Almighty is a kind of worship. Regarding this point, Allah the Almighty says:

(He said: "I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you know not.")

[Yusuf, 86]

Indeed, humble supplication and standing in submission at the Lord's Door makes man wear the cloak of servitude to Him. Besides, in his life, the Messenger of Allah PBUH taught us these two things: patience and making Du'a submissively. Through his unmatched perseverance in the face of hardships and distresses, he PBUH teaches us that Muslims in general and Du'aat (Islamic missioners) in particular have to endure calamities and be patient on them. At the same time, by his prayer and humble Du'a to Allah the Almighty, he PBUH teaches us that meek complaint and truthful Du'a are the token of man's true faith and sincere servitude to Allah, Exalted and Sublime be He. This is most eloquently manifested in the Noble Prophet's Du'a to Allah the Almighty in At-Ta'if:

(To You, my Lord, I complain of my weakness, lack of support and the humiliation I am made to receive. Most Compassionate and Merciful! You are the Lord of the weak, and you are my Lord. To whom do You leave me? To a distant person who receives me with hostility? Or to an enemy You have given power over me? As long as you are not displeased with me, I do not care what I face. I would, however, be much happier with Your mercy. I seek refuge in the light of Your face by which all darkness is dispelled and both this life and the life to come are put in their right course against incurring Your Wrath or being the subject of Your Anger. To You, I submit, until I earn Your pleasure. Everything is powerless without Your Support.)

[At-Tabarani, on the authority of Abdullah bin Ja'far]

6-    The Noble Prophet gets hurt like all human beings:

Dear noble brothers, man's ownself is basically  molded to feel both the sweetness of bliss and the pain of torture, and his ownself is molded to incline to seek the former and avoid the latter. Accordingly, when man gets used to bear all kinds of harm and torture while he is carrying out Allah's Commands in pursuit of His Good Pleasure and Generous Recompense, this does not mean that he loses his feeling of pain when he is hurt or sweetness when he is relieved, because after all he is a human being. However, if man, favors the harm done to him, no matter how painful or sorrowful it might be, over the relief, regardless of its pleasures and enjoyments, for the sake of his Lord's Pleasure and in order to carry out his mission in life, then he deserves a never-ending Bliss in his Lord's Paradise, where he finds things that no human eye has ever seen, no human ear has ever heard of, and no human heart has ever conceived. Indeed, were the Noble Prophet PBUH non-human, he would not be the best of all mankind.

7-    "So verily, with the hardship, there is relief"

Dear noble brothers in the Arab and Muslim worlds, when one of us reflects on the Noble Prophet's life with his people, he will notice that he received from his people and bore patiently harm that no other human being could ever bear. Nevertheless, together with each kind of harm, and at each stage of the Prophet's Da'wah, a Divine Response to such a kind of harm came in order to provide him with comfort, consolation, honor and help, and in order to prevent the feelings of impatience, despair and hopelessness to sneak into his noble heart. Hence, Isra' and Mi'raj are in fact one of such Divine Responses that meant to honor the Noble Prophet for enduring the unbearable harm and trial which unveiled his unmatched care to rightly guide his people. Also, they exposed the incomparable patience that he displayed towards the harm he received from his people, and the most noble and merciful attitude towards them when the Angel of Mountains offered to press together the two mountains of At-Ta'if on them, which was the Divine Response to the Prophet's Du'a in At-Ta'if. Regarding this point, pay attention to Allah's Words at the end of the first Ayah in Surat Al-Isra', please:

(…Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.)

[Al-Isra', 1]

These Words mean that Allah the Almighty Who sees everything and hears everything, heard Muhammad's Du'a in at-Ta'if and knew his great care to rightly guide his people, who not only rejected his Da'wah but also exaggerated in their ill-treatment to him. Such a fact applies, in one way or another, to every true believer everywhere and at all times.  Allah the Almighty says,

(So verily, with the hardship, there is relief* Verily, with the hardship, there is relief (i.e. there is one hardship with two reliefs, so one hardship cannot overcome two reliefs).)

[Ash-Sharh, 5-6]

This is a Divine Law, for opening one's breast, removing one's burdens and raising high one's fame after hardship and distress are some of Allah's Divine Laws with His slaves. In addition, Allah the Almighty emphasizes that ease and relief must inevitably come after grief and distress in both the worldly life and the Hereafter. The same point is stressed as well in the following Noble Hadith:

(There is one hardship with two reliefs, so one hardship cannot overcome two reliefs.)

[Malik in Al-Mawta', on the authority of Umar bin al-Khattab]

A poet said:

Turn away from all your worries,
and leave things up to Divine Decree.
Hope for good to come soon,
to make you forget all past troubles.
Perhaps an unpleasant thing
brings therewith joyful ends.
Perhaps things get narrowed,
but then there follows wide space.
Allah does whatever He desires,
so never get upset about His Decree.
Since Allah has always bestowed his Favors upon you,
So count things according to the blessings you have been given.

8-    A moral lesson taught in At-Ta'if:

Dear noble brothers in the Arab and Muslim worlds, there is another moral lesson that can be learned from the Messenger of Allah PBUH when he was in At-Ta'if. Zaid bin Harithah asked him,

("How will you re-enter when they had exiled you?" The Prophet PBUH replied, "O Zaid, Allah is going to provide relief and a way out from the difficulty that you are witnessing, and Allah is going to support His religion and will cause His prophet to prevail.")

In fact, all that which the Noble Prophet PBUH had in At-Ta'if including rejection, belying, mockery, and injury, together with what he had previously suffered in Makkah of disbelief, rejection, denial, persecution, intimidation, and exile, most grievous and painful as that had been, could not in the least weaken his Faith in Allah and confidence in Him, nor could that enfeeble his determination, because he was definitely certain that Allah will never forsake His Religion or let down His Messenger or true believers, no matter how fierce or great the attack of enemies might be. To this effect, Allah the Almighty says:

(And say: "Truth (i.e. Islamic Monotheism or this Qur'an or Jihad against polytheists) has come and Batil (falsehood, i.e. Satan or polytheism, etc.) has vanished. Surely! Batil is ever bound to vanish.")

 [Al-Isra', 81]

It is absolutely wrong to believe that Allah the Almighty does not help His Messengers PBUT or provide them with victory, that He, Most Gracious, does not support His soldiers or grant them victory over their enemies, that He, All-High, does not help His Religion or Book, or that He, Most Merciful, grants domination to Shirk (polytheism) over Tawheed (Monotheism) and to al-Batil (Falsehood) over al-Haqq (the Truth), in such a way that Tawheed and al-Haqq vanish for ever, simply because this bad thought about Allah clashes with His Divine Perfection, Majesty, and His Beautiful Names and Exalted Attributes. Needless to say, His Infinite Divine Might and Wisdom necessitate that His Messengers PBUT and righteous devoted worshippers must never suffer disgrace or humiliation and that lasting victory or domination must never be given to His enemies. Those who think that such a thing could ever happen do not know Allah, His Beautiful Names or Exalted Attributes.

Glory be to You, O Allah he is not humiliated whom You have befriended. O Allah, teach us what benefit us and let us make benefit of what You have taught us and increase our knowledge.

The 2nd Khutbah:

The miracle:

1-    Discussing miracles to those whose faith is weak is useless:

Dear noble brothers, I would like to mention a brief fact about the miracle but let me first tell you something. As for the reality of miracles from the Islamic perspective, it is meaningless to speak about miracles, which are acts or events that do not follow the known laws of nature, if the whole religion, which is based on belief in Allah as the One and Only Perfect Deity, Who knows everything, Who is Powerful over everything, and Who does whatever He desires, is rejected or suspected. This is because people should be first addressed concerning basics of religion while believing Muslims are addressed concerning branches of religion, one of which is discussing miracles.

2-    The universe as a whole is a miracle:

Well, the whole universe, with all its heavenly objects, galaxies, stars, planets, comets, distances between heavenly objects, velocity of their motion, their sizes, their movements and orbits, gravitational forces between them, the earth with its mountains and valleys, planes and deserts, seas and lakes, rivers and springs, animals and plants, fishes and birds, minerals and resources, human beings with their minds and emotions, organs and parts of bodies, natural dispositions and tempers, marriage and offspring, life and death, are all miracles, and what great miracles! In other words, the whole universe, in its normal state and without any abnormal incidents or deviation from its laws, is a marvelous Divine Miracle in itself! The proof is referred to in Allah's Words:

(Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding* Those who remember Allah (always, and in prayers) standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth, (saying): "Our Lord! You have not created (all) this without purpose, glory to You! (Exalted be You above all that they associate with You as partners). Give us salvation from the torment of the Fire.)
 [Aal-'Imran, 190,191]

3-    The human body is a miracle:

Our human body in itself is an amazing miracle, and the closest and most obvious of all to us. For example, in the human head there are 300.000 hairs; and each hair has a separate root, vein, artery, muscle, nerve, fat-gland, and color-gland. Is that not a miracle?!

In the human retina there are ten layers, in the last of which there are 140 million light-receptors; and from the eye to the brain there goes a visionary nerve that has 500,000 nerve fibers, which can distinguish between 800.000 shades of one color. Is that not a miracle?!

In the human ear there is a network of 30.000 auditory cells to transmit most delicate sound waves to the brain, which has special apparatus for measuring time-difference of the sound received by both ears, which is sometimes less than a 1\1600 of a second, and which enables man to find out direction of the sound-source. Is that not a miracle?!

On the surface of the human tongue there are 9.000 gustative teats to distinguish the different kinds of tastes. Is that not a miracle?! Each sound man utters requires 17 muscles in order to be articulated; so how many movements of the tongue muscles does a sermon of an hour need?! Is that not a miracle?!

In man there is a pump, the heart, which works without a moment's cessation to pump eight cubic meters of blood every day and, on average, as much blood as that would fill a skyscraper in man's lifetime. Is that not a miracle?!

In the human brain, there are a billion cells and a hundred billion supporting cells whose function has not been discovered yet. In fact, the brain is the most complicated organ of human body; and it is unable to understand its own self. Is that not a miracle?!

The human stomach has more than a billion cells that produce several liters of hydrochloric acid per day for digesting food; but it is still unknown how the stomach does not digest itself. Is that not a miracle?! In the human intestine there are 3.600 intestinal fluffs in each square centimeter for food absorption; and such fluffs are renewed every 48 hours. Is that not a miracle?!

Underneath the human skin there are about 16 million sweat-glands for controlling heat of the body. Is that not a miracle?!

In the human liver there are 300 billion cells that can be totally renewed within a period of four months. Furthermore, the different jobs of the liver are numerous and vital, and man cannot live without a liver for more than three hours. Is that not a miracle?!

In the human kidneys there are two million purification units whose total length is 100 kilometers, through which blood flows many times a day. Is that not a miracle?!

In the human nose there are 20 million smell nerve-ends, each of which ends in seven fluffs surrounded by a mucous liquid which reacts chemically with the smell to form a geometrical shape that is sent to the brain and displayed in the smell-memory file which contains 10.000 smell items. When the shape sent from the nose conforms to one of the items, man distinguishes the kind of the smell. All this takes place in less than a second. Is the sense of smell not a miracle?!

Conclusion:

Unfortunately, man's deep involvement in his own mundane affairs, his heedlessness of his own Maker, and the long-termed familiarity with the things around him, make him fails to notice any of the Divine miracles around him or greatness of his Lord's Creativity. Not to mention, he wrongly thinks that miracles are only such events that do not follow the familiar laws of nature. He even goes further as to make the things familiar to him a standard whereby he measures his belief or disbelief in other things. Such an act on the part of man is mere ignorance, because contemplation shows clearly that the Maker, Most Gracious, Who has created the great Divine Miracle of the whole universe, is by no means unable to add another miracle thereto, change or alter some of His Divine Laws according to which He has originated the whole universe.

Some western scientists said, "The Power that has created the universe is definitely Able to omit something from or add something to it. If the universe did not exist, and one of those who deny miracles were informed that a universe will be brought into existence, he would soon claim that such a thing would be impossible, and his denial would be far more greater than denying some miracles."
