Interpretation of the Quran- Surat Al-A'raf (7)- Lesson (34): The story of Moses with Pharaoh

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Introduction:

Honorable brother, with lesson thirty four from surat Al_A’raaf, with the verse one hundred and three, Allah the Almighty says:

“Then We sent after them Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were unjust toward them. So see how was the end of the corrupters.”

[Surat Al_A’raaf, verse 103]

1. Prophets are examples for human beings:

Honorable brother, there are many prophet stories in the holy quran. Those prophets are tops of human beings who were differentiated with humane perfection. In fact they are models for us. Those prophets did not overlook Allah a single moment, as the prophet peace be upon him said:

“and so the prophets, their eyes sleep whereas their hearts don’t”

[agreed on]

Those who knew the truth, they knew their Lord, they knew the secret of their existence, they knew the aim of their existence. They were enlightened with the light of their Lord, they carried the burden of mankind, and delivered the message of Allah to His creatures.

2. Prophets’ Stories have lessons and morals:

Allah the Almighty tells us their stories in order to make them (the stories) morals to us:

“There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding.”

[Surat Yousuf, verse 111]

Even Allah the Almighty tells their stories that they might be lessons to the prophets themselves, the noble verse:

“And each [story] We relate to you from the news of the messengers is that by which We make firm your heart”

[Surat Hud, verse 120]

If the heart of the master of mankind, the lover of the right gets more determined by hearing the story of another prophet, so it is more important for our hearts to be filled with belief by hearing the story of the master of mankind.
You are a believer, life is full of difficulties, disasters, calamities, oppression, poverty and illness. If you read the story of our master Yunis (Jonas) when suddenly he found himself in the whale’s abdomen. Is there a larger disaster? There is no hope, not one in a billion, and while he was in the whale’s abdomen:

“And he called out within the darknesses,

In the darkness of the whale’s abdomen, the darkness of the night and the darkness of the sea.

“And he called out in the darknesses,

“But he cried out in the darkness, saying: There is no God save Thee. Be Thou glorified! Lo! I have been a wrong-doer. (87) Then we heard his prayer and saved him from the anguish. (88) “

[Surat Al_Anbia’, verses 87, 88]

But you are a believer, what comes as a consequence gives you a believing shock.

“And thus do We save the believers.”

[Surat Al_Anbia’, verses 88]

That was for our master Younis (Jonas) and for every believer, so do not worry, be with Allah and do not care, be with Allah, you will find Allah with you, ask Allah for your need, beg Him by doing good deeds, by charity, call Him at night, present your problem to Him, let the dialogue be between you and Allah the Almighty, complain to Him your suffering, ask Him for the salt to your food, ask Him for all your needs.
Prophets’ stories are not intended to get knowledge from, but for setting morals. Never ever read a prophet’s story as a story. But read it as a lesson, instruction, a method and a way to Allah.
 So:

“There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was the Qur'an a narration invented”

[Surat Yousuf, verse 111]

Now, we are in front of a very long story, but which has enough preaches, lessons, elicitations, facts and rules, to fill our lives with peace, tranquility, enlightening and way to Allah the Almighty that those stories draw. After Allah the Almighty talked about the previous prophets, now came the role of our master Moses with his people:

“Then We sent after them Moses”

“Then We sent after them Moses”

1.The Right is old, Allah sent a prophet to show it again:

As if it was under the ground then we sent it back. What do you understand from this picturing? We understand that the right is old, and the right was brought by Adam peace be upon him, and there are times for humanity when the right is buried, then a prophet comes and shows it, then it is buried again and another prophet comes and shows it again. That is what is meant by “We sent”. The right is old, it is centered in man’s nature and it is brought by the prophets.

“Then We sent after them Moses”

Whenever man is lost, whenever his interests predominates his principles, whenever his desires predominates his principles, whenever he is drawn to the earth and turns his back to the heaven, a messenger’s message comes to wake him up, to guide him, to warn him, may he pays attention to the secret of his existence.

“Then We sent after them Moses with Our signs”

2. The meaning of the signs:

The signs are marks, Allah the Almighty gave us a power of perception. He sent us a prophet with evidence, signs, obvious and clear things.

The Cosmic signs:

No doubt you know that there are three types of signs: the cosmic signs. This universe is the first fixed thing. The whole universe enunciates the existence of Allah, His monotheism, and His perfection. The universe is a sign of Allah’s creational signs, the cosmic signs.

The Formational Signs:

Or His creational signs, but His actions are something else, but they are formational signs, when Allah saved our master Moses from Pharaoh, that is a big sign.

“The companions of Moses said, "Indeed, we are to be overtaken!" [Moses] said, "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me."

[surat Ash_Shu’ara’, verses 61, 62]

How did Allah save our master Moses? How did He save our master Ibrahim? How did He save our master Mohammad in the immigration, in the bay, at At_Taa’if, in the battle of the trench (Al_Khandaq). Those stories are lessons to us.

What I wish for once again: Do not read a story in the quran as a story, it is a profound lesson, it is a message from Allah. There are cosmic signs, which are His creation, and there are formational signs which are His deeds.

And remind them of the days of Allah

Another subject that concerns each one of you, no one of you brother has not had a day with Allah, Allah the Almighty says:

“and remind them of the days of Allah”

[Surat Ibrahim, verse 5]

Once in a great hardship, Allah the Almighty helped you out, or a disaster, Allah the Almighty helped you out, or a powerful, spiteful enemy, Allah the Almighty made you win over him.
Sometimes getting saved from a disaster, that Allah responds to your call, have mercy on you, bless you, give you, marry you, help your tongue in calling to Allah, those are from the days of Allah, Allah the Almighty says:

“and remind them of the days of Allah”

And you, dear brother, if you have wonderful relations with Allah, blessing relations, support relations, connection relations, intimate relations with Allah the Almighty, remember those days.

“and remind them of the days of Allah”

Once one king in Al_Andalus (Spain), Ibn Abbad, was walking in the garden of his palace, he saw a pool of water which was affected by the wind, as if the surface of the water was a chain, and he was a poet, he said,

The wind has made from water a chain,
***

And he couldn’t finish the rhyme, then he heard a maid from behind saying:

What an shield for fighting has it been frozen
***

So the king was impressed with the maid and he married her. He honored her in an unimaginable way. Once she missed her poor life, she missed walking in the mud, so the king brought her musk and ambergris, mixed them with rose water and said to her: “this is mud, walk in it”. Then, later on, he was secluded from his throne and put in jail. In a bad moment with her she said to him: “I have never seen anything good from you!” he blamed her and said: “not even the mud day?”
Sometimes things are not the way they should be and you get upset, remind yourself with the days of Allah, the day when you made it in your study, in marriage, introduced you to His high self, drove you to the people of right. There is no one who has not had days with Allah, the hero does not forget those days, out of loyalty:

“and remind them of the days of Allah”

Therefore, Allah the Almighty has cosmic signs, formational signs and quranic signs. His creation is a sign, His deeds are a sign, His words are a sign. Those signs are the ways to Allah the Almighty. Since the origin of religion is knowing Allah ; through His creation, His deeds, and His words.

“Then We sent after them Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment”

[Surat Al_A’raaf, verse 103]

To Pharaoh and his establishment”

The meaning of establishment:

What is the meaning of (and His establishment)?
Some said: establishment means the men who fill the eye; looks, body, intelligence, eloquence, diction, logic and powerful personality. From the meanings of the word establishment is that they fill the eye and the hearing, if they speak, you listen to them, and if you look at them, they fill your eyes with reverence.
A man who fills the eye went to Abu Haneefah while he was giving a lesson, and it seems that Abu Haneefah had pain in his leg, so he had to stretch it, although the prophet (PBUH) never stretched out his legs, but whoever has excuse is excused. A great broad shouldered man wearing a cloak and a tiara went to him, and sat to attend the lesson. Abu Haneefah got embarrassed with him, and raised his leg, and the lesson was about Al Fajr prayer, and Abu Haneefah explained the matter, and after finishing the matter, the man asked “ what would we do if the sun rose before dawn? He answered: then Abu Haneefah would stretch his foot.

The main thing is that the establishments are men who fill the eye and the hearing.

“Then We sent after them Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were unjust toward them.”

[Surat Al_A’raaf, verse 103]

But they were unjust toward them

1. The talk about the world gets attentive ears:

When you listen to a cosmic sign and not care about it, and that sign was made to transfer you from the darkness into the light, was meant to take you to the path of Allah, if you do not care about it, then you are unjust. Notice the people in the dark ages, if you talk about the world, you’ll find all the attention, people will listen to you, have discussions with you, their eyes will glow, their cheeks will redden. If you talk to them about religion, they will sleep, yawn and apologize, and that is a big problem:

but they were unjust toward them.”

The trade affairs, buying and selling, currency prices, houses, companies, Islamic banks, all these get attentive ears.

2. The talk about Allah and the afterlife does not get attention:

If the talk is about Allah the Almighty, His messengers, His paradise and about the afterlife, as if the topic does not concern anybody, the unjust in this sign is that it was not given its right.
Imagine a million dollar check turned backwards on the table, it looks to the eye as a white sheet of paper. You had to write a mathematical problem: 7× 9. What is the result of this operation? You wrote it on this rectangular sheet of paper and then tore it down, then you discovered after a while that it was a million dollar check and that it could have solved all your problems; buying a house, a boat, a summer house, and a workshop. How much would you regret? Do not forget the proverb in Allah’s saying:

“They have exchanged the signs of Allah for a small price”

[Surat At_Tawbah, verse 9]

3. A word that inclines injustice: what did he say earlierm

You listen to a scientific lesson, a lesson in scientific miraculous, a lesson in the holy quran interpretation, what did he say before? He would say: the preach is great, what did he say? By Allah I do not remember anything, so excuse me. He did not remember anything because he was not with the preacher, neither with the teacher, he was with his problems, his desires, that is the meaning of:

“but they were unjust toward them”

The words of Right should shake your depth, your skin should shake from the quran.

So see how was the end of the corrupters

“So see how was the end of the corrupters.103)”

Those who left the path of Allah and were not concerned about the signs of Allah.

Once I was in the USA and gave a lesson in a city called ‘Toledo’. After the end of the lesson a man introduced himself to me and I knew his brother who was a doctor, he said: do you know the distance I crossed in order to come and listen to this lesson? I said: how far is it? he said: 600 miles, that is a thousand kilometers. We, in Syria, are in a great bliss, we listen to lessons, interpretation, Hadiths, the biography, and the beautiful names of Allah easily, he swore he crossed 600 miles to listen to the lesson. If you are in a country where lessons are available and easy to attend and listen to, you can take notes, those are great blesses only those who lost them know their value.

“And Moses said, "O Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds”

[Surat Al_A’raaf, verse 104]

“And Moses said, "O Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds”

1. Pharaoh the pretentious of Godliness and Lordliness:

 Pharaoh pretended Godliness, and said:

"I am your most exalted lord."

[Surat An_Naazi’aat, verse 24]

“I have not known you to have a god other than me.”

[Surat Al_Qasas, verse 38]

In the era of Pharaoh, people thought that there is a God for everything; for goodness, evil, the sun, the moon, the night, and for the day. Many Gods. Pharaoh said:

“I have not known you to have a god other than me.”

 And he said:

"I am your most exalted lord."

“And Moses said, "O Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds”

2. Allah is one, and He is the Lord of the Worlds:

The God of the good and the evil, the heaven and the earth, the sun and the moon, humans and demons.

“I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds”

 The only God.

Who is obligated not to say about Allah except the truth

"[Who is] obligated not to say about Allah except the truth. I have come to you with clear evidence from your Lord, so send with me the Children of Israel.”

[Surat Al_A’raaf, verse 105]

It is not appropriate for Messengers of Allah to say anything but the truth:

It is not appropriate for a messenger of Allah whom Allah sent to guide his creation to talk with anything except the truth.

 “obligated”
I’ll tell you a quick story, that the prophet (PBUH) said before the battle of Badr:

“Do not kill my uncle Al_Abbas”

[mentioned in the tradition]

His uncle Al_Abbas was in Makkah, one of the companions, and they are not impeccable, said: “we kill our fathers and brother and the prophet prohibits us to kill his uncle?” He was suspicious, then it appeared that the prophet’s uncle Al_Abbas was a Muslim, and was appointed by the prophet in Makkah, and he informed the prophet with everything that was going on in Makkah. So the prophet’s administration was very clever, he had eyes, and his uncle concealed his conversion to Islam and his belief. If his uncle had not left with the non-believers to meet Muhammad and his companions in Badr, he would have revealed himself and his mission and role would have ended. And if the generous prophet had said: my uncle converted to Islam, do not spread the word to Quraish, and the truth was revealed, his mission and role would have ended. And if the prophet said nothing and according to his companions, his uncle was a non believer, and they were in a state of war, and there was a great possibility that he would be killed. So for a great wisdom the prophet could not say other than those words: “ Do not kill Al_Abbas my uncle”. So that companion who had doubts, said after the truth had been revealed: “ I swear to Allah I kept giving charity for twenty years hoping that Allah would forgive me my mistrust with the messenger of Allah”
It is impossible for a prophet to be biased to his relatives. If Allah the Almighty honored a man with the call to Allah the Almighty, even though he is not impeccable, he could not say anything for his own interest.
When the prophet’s son Ibrahim died, the companions for their love of the prophet were delusional, and the sun eclipsed, that the sun eclipsed for the death of Ibrahim. Any person with a modest mission, and one of the students thought that the event was for the sake of his sheikh, would the sheikh keep silent? And would he say: it is very useful, and never say anything because it would support his position? No, the prophet (PBUH) stood and preached, he said:

“the sun and the moon never eclipse for the death nor the life of anyone”

[produced by Al_Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Daoud, At_Tirmithi, An_Nisaa’i from Al_Mugheerah Bin Shu’bah]

You must be scientific. Do not live in illusion, the believer is safe on this mission, he does not philosophize anything for his own sake, does not give illusions, nor exaggerate, nor show up his own self. The truthful believer shows, in the dim, the truth of this religion and this generous prophet.

“..But they repelled them. Now, see the nature of the consequence for the corrupters! (103) Moses said: O Pharaoh! Lo! I am a messenger from the Lord of the Worlds, (104)

[Surat Al_A’raaf, verse 103,104]

The God is one, Lord of the whole worlds.

“[Who is] obligated not to say about Allah except the truth.”

It is not appropriate for a generous prophet whom Allah sent to guide the creation to say something for his own sake.
Anecdote: once I wanted to buy a curtain for the guest room, I asked the shop assistant, he said: “master, we must cut the cloth double the width of the wall plus one meter so that the curtain would be folded in a beautiful way. He persuaded me after what seemed a semi lecture. The wall was three meters wide multiplied by two plus one, seven meters. I chose a cloth, when he measured it, he found it was less than the double, it was five meters, he said: this embroidered one is nicer this size. He gave me another fact immediately. He said that from his own inclination for his own sake. I liked that cloth, but he gave another rule, since it is embroidered, then it is nicer with that size.
Believe me brother, nine tenths of the people’s talk is from their own inclination, but the prophet (PBUH), Allah the Almighty said concerning him:

“Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. It is not but a revelation revealed”

[Surat An_Najm, verses 3,4]

I have come to you with clear evidence from your Lord,

“ I have come to you with clear evidence from your Lord, so send with me the Children of Israel." 105

1. I have come to you with clear evidence from your Lord

I have a clue, an evidence, a sign, and a miracle.

2. So send with me the Children of Israel."

It seems that those people were done unjust by Pharaoh, he slaughtered their sons, and spared their women.
Some narrations mention that someone had a dream that a child from Israel will kill the king of Pharaohs, he told Pharaoh the dream. And Pharaoh was a tyrant, titan, and a killer, so he ordered that all newborn boys of Israel to be killed, and any midwife who did not report the birth of a boy, would be killed instead. The solution of this problem was with Pharaoh. But the child who would destroy his regimen was raised in his palace, you want and Allah wants and Allah does what He wants.

“son of Adam, be to me as I want, I will be to you as you want, son of Adam, if you yield to me for what I want, I will satisfy you with what you want, and if you do not yield to me for what I want, I would exhaust you in what you want, and only what I want prevails”

[mentioned in the tradition]

With Allah the Almighty there is never a clever person, but the cautious is taken from his safe side, as it was said: I knew Allah from repealing decisions.

“so send with me the Children of Israel”

The fact that Pharaoh is considered a pretentious that there are Gods, or that he is a God, he said:

"[Pharaoh] said, "If you have come with a sign, then bring it forth, if you should be of the truthful." 106)

"He said, "If you have come with a sign, then bring it forth, if you should be of the truthful."

A man kills without account, and the killing of man is easier to him than killing a fly, why didn’t he kill our master Moses? Because Pharaoh was in Allah the Almighty’s hands. That is belief and monotheism, and if Allah is with you, then who is against you? Even the word of right does not prevent livelihood, nor does it bring death closer. Pharaoh said:

'[Pharaoh] said, “If you have come with a sign, then bring it forth, if you should be of the truthful.” 106)

Moses first miracle: So Moses threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent, manifest

 Our master Moses:

“So Moses threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent, manifest. (107)”

[Surat Al_A’raaf, verse 107]

1. The story of Moses staff:

But for a profound wisdom in apostrophizing Allah the Almighty said to our master Moses:

“And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?"

[Surat Ta-Ha, verse 17]

Does Allah not know what was in his right hand? A strange question, the answer:

, "It is my staff"

[Surat Ta-Ha, verse 18]

But it seems that this noble prophet who apostrophized his Lord and was pleased with it, wanted to make secondary meanings in order to continue the talk, He said:

“And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?" He said, "It is my staff;

“I lean upon it, and I bring down leaves for my sheep”

Then he was ashamed and said: “Maybe I have talked too much, maybe I have answered in a way that Allah didn’t want, he said:

“and I have therein other uses."

If Allah the Almighty allows me to continue and say: what are those other uses Moses? Very accurate words:

“And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?" He said, "It is my staff; I lean upon it, and I bring down leaves for my sheep and I have therein other uses."

The truth is that Allah the Almighty wanted to draw his attention, what is that thing in your hand? A wooden staff, from dry wood, its origin is plant, and for this staff to return a live green flowery branch is a miracle, what would you say if it turned from being inanimate into a plant, into an animal?

“And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?"

Be careful, the thing in your hand is a staff, and it is inanimate, and it is impossible that it would turn into a flowery leafy branch, but in a while it will turn into a moving snake:

"It is my staff; I lean upon it, and I bring down leaves for my sheep and I have therein other uses."

"[Allah] said, "Throw it down, O Moses." So he threw it down, and thereupon it was a snake, moving swiftly.

2. The first experience of the staff: turning into a small snake in front of Moses:

That was the first experience, Allah made it a small snake so that Moses would not be afraid.

"[Allah] said, "Seize it and fear not; We will return it to its former condition. 21

When he met Pharaoh he was sure of himself. If Allah had said: when you meet Pharaoh, throw the staff and it will turn into a snake, and he was inexperienced. So He soothed him, it was as a rehearsing throw, so he was comforted / soothed. That hard staff became a moving snake.

3. Turning into a large serpent in front of Pharaoh:

In front of Pharaoh, he said to him:

“If you have come with a sign, then bring it forth, if you should be of the truthful.” 106) So Moses threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent, manifest. (107)

Some orientalists said: there is contradiction in the quran, once it says: a snake, another time it says: a serpent. But it is a snake between him and Allah so that he wouldn’t be afraid because he is a human. Imagine a man with a staff thrown in front of him and it turns into a 12 meter serpent, but in the second time, he was sure of himself:

So Moses threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent, manifest. (107)

Moses second miracle:

Our master Moses was dark skinned, Allah the Almighty said:

“And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white [with radiance] for the observers.” 108

Once our master Ali said: “by Allah by Allah (twice) digging two wells with two needles is impossible, brooming the land of Hijaz on a windy day with two feathers is impossible, transferring two seas with two sieves is impossible, and washing two black slaves until they become white is also impossible.”

“And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white [with radiance] for the observers.” 108

In another narration: as if it is a shining planet.
The fact in those two verses shook Pharaoh’s entity, Pharaoh said:

"I (Pharaoh) am your Lord the Highest”

[surat An_Nazi’aat, verse 24]

 Pharaoh said:

“ I know not that ye have a god other than me”

[Surat Al_Qasas, verse 38]

Those two miracles shook Pharaoh’s entity, so he became smaller, he shrank, and refrained. And all the people around him were hypocrites.

Said the eminent among the people of Pharaoh,

“Said the eminent among the people of Pharaoh, "Indeed, this is a learned magician” 109

That you are our God, Pharaoh, and will still be, and that is a magician:

"Indeed, this is a learned magician” 109

He wants to expel you from your land, so what do you instruct

Who wants to expel you from your land [through magic], so what do you instruct?"

Some of them said: that is Pharaoh’s talk.

so what do you instruct?"

When was it normal for a tyrant king to say:

"so what do you instruct?"

He became weak, refrained and smaller:

"Said the eminent among the people of Pharaoh, "Indeed, this is a learned magician” 109

 Pharaoh continued:

"Who wants to expel you from your land [through magic], so what do you instruct?"

They said, "Postpone him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers

The matter is much bigger. It is not a matter of magic, it needs more preparation. The matter does not tolerate a current solution.

“They said, "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers” 111

He announced on all the nations to get him the big outstanding magicians.

“They said, "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers” 111

Who will bring you every learned magician.

“Who will bring you every learned magician." 112

The truth is that he is the magician, and he knows perfectly well that what he saw was not magic, but real serpent. That was from hypocrisy, and the hypocrite is he himself.

“Who will bring you every learned magician." 112”

The Magicians in a daring appointment with Moses:

1.The arrival of the magicians to the place of the challenge:

“And the magicians came to Pharaoh. They said, “Indeed for us is a reward if we are the predominant.” 113

That is they arrived in Pharaoh’s palace.

2- The magicians request for a reward from Pharaoh:

“And the magicians came to Pharaoh. They said, "Indeed for us is a reward if we are the predominant." 113

Pharaoh’s position got weak, his status was shaken, he got smaller, he knew that someone had come to shake this god, the pretentious god.

"Indeed for us is a reward”

They wanted to make use of Pharaoh’s weakness:

“Indeed for us is a reward if we are the predominant.” 113

3- Pharaoh’s encouragement for the magicians with tempting rewards:

“He said, "Yes, and, [moreover], you will be among those made near [to me]." 114

Without hesitation, and above the reward:

“They said, "O Moses, either you throw, or we will be the ones to throw."

"you will be among those made near [to me].”

“They said, "O Moses, either you throw [your staff], or we will be the ones to throw [first]."

We will continue the story in the next lesson if Allah wills
