Ramadan Hadiths- (6): Fasting is a shield

In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful

(Verily, fasting is a shield by which the servant seeks protection from the Hellfire. It is observed for Me, and I shall reward for it.)

[Ahmad, on the authority of Jabir]

Siyaam (Fasting) is a shield that protects the one who fasts from all harming desires and sins which make man prone to Hell-Fire and bring about misery in the worldly life and the Hereafter.

(Abdul Rahman bin Yazid reported that he, Elqimah and Al-Aswad came to Abdullah bin Mas'ud who said, Messenger (PBUH) said to us, "O young men, those of you who can support a wife should marry, for it (marriage) controls the gaze and preserves one from immorality. And whoever cannot (marry) should fast, for it is a means of reducing the sexual desire.")

[Bukhari, on the authority of Abdul Rahman bin Yazid]

This means that Siyaam suppresses desires, and thus it protects the one who fasts from the perils and pain of bachelorhood. It has been reported in Al-Musnad, that Jabir narrated that the Prophet PBUH said:

(Verily, fasting is only a shield by which the servant seeks protection from the Hellfire. It is observed for Me, and I shall reward for it.)

[Ahmad, on the authority of Jabir]
