In the Name of Allah, The Most Gracious, Most Merciful
The main problem of Muslims:
When your son gets sick, it is not enough to make Du'a (supplication) for his recovery. Rather you should take him to a good physician, give him proper medication and supervise his treatment. After that, you invoke Allah from the depth of your heart, saying, "O Lord, you are The One Who heals."
You should use all available means as if they were the only resort, and you put your trust in Allah as if those means were nothing.
If your son is not good in mathematics, asking him to make Du'a to pass the exam is not sufficient. Rather you should hire a tutor to teach him the difficult parts of mathematics. Then, you ask him to make Du'a to Allah in order to succeed in the exam.
If an agricultural pest invades your crops, you should use pesticide according to the instructions of the agricultural engineer. Then, you invoke Allah saying, "O Lord, keep my crops safe."
If your goods are stagnant, it may be due to an error in product selection, pricing or marketing.
Once, our Master Umar, saw a group of people begging from other people, so he asked them, "Who are you?" They replied, "We are al-Mutawakkilun (the ones who accompany their action with putting trust in Allah)." Upon hearing their reply Umar said, "You are liars. Al-Mutawakkel (singular of Mutawakkilun) is like the one who plants a seed in the soil, and then he puts his trust in Allah the Almighty."
In another incident, Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, saw a camel afflicted with scabies, so he asked his owner, "O brother, what have you done to it so far?" The man said, "I have made Du'a to Allah for it, so that it may be cured." Then, Umar said, "Will you treat it with tar alongside the Du'a you have made?"
This (Tawaakul: false reliance on Allah, based on expecting results without making any effort) is the main problem of Muslims. They invoke Allah to destroy their enemies saying, "O Lord, destroy them, for they cannot escape You. O Lord, make their destruction come through their own plotting." Then, they go to sleep without preparing or using any available means. Meanwhile, their enemies do not sleep; they work hard to be the best.
We will never overpower them unless we use all available means and apply the following Ayah:
﴾ And make ready against them all you can of power ﴿
